I was approached by Stephen Merchant to write music for the Hello Ladies pilot after working on An Idiot Abroad. The music went down well, the pilot was commissioned into a series and the rest, as they say, is contemporary media history. Merchant had a very clear idea of what he wanted the music to be; which was to homage the blue-eyed soul of the 1970′s and 80′s, without descending into kitsch or spoof. It was also important that the music didn’t act as a means to reinforce punchlines or underscore humour. The music is all about articulating characterisation. And scene transitions, of course. Come on, it is a sitcom after all.
